GIST Testing FAQs: The Answers You Need
Which tests will diagnose GIST?
The initial diagnosis will result from a CT scan with contrast, and/or MRI, chest imaging, endoscopic ultrasound, and endoscopy, if not previously done.
How far can a tumor spread?
Early detection and treatment are important to slowing the growth of a GIST tumor. Without early detection and treatment, a primary GIST tumor can grow large or spread (metastasize) to other locations in the body.
How often do I need to be monitored?
Patients should have a CT scan every 3 to 6 months.
How are the tests read?
A radiologist will examine the results and forward them to the doctor who requested the scan.
How long does it generally take to get results?
The timetable depends on the schedules of the radiologist and doctor. The radiologist compiles the results and forwards a report to your doctor.
