Treating GIST
Surgery is the standard treatment for most patients diagnosed with GIST.
If the tumor cannot be removed, GLEEVEC® therapy may be considered for those patients with KIT+ GIST.
All About GLEEVEC
GLEEVEC is a type of medication known as a kinase inhibitor. GLEEVEC works by blocking the KIT signal that keeps GIST cells growing and dividing.
GLEEVEC indications
GLEEVEC is indicated for the treatment of KIT+ GIST that cannot be removed by surgery and/or has spread.
It is also indicated after surgery for those who have had their GISTs completely removed. Approval is based on survival without a return of cancer (recurrence-free survival) with a median follow-up of 14 months. Clinical benefit has not been demonstrated by a long-term effect on recurrence-free survival or survival.
