Unresectable/Metastatic GIST: Option for Treating It
What is metastatic GIST?
When GIST is metastatic, it means that the tumor has spread to another location. The liver is the most common organ for metastases. GISTs may also spread within the abdominal cavity.
In rare cases of advanced disease, it may spread to the lungs or other extra-abdominal organs. GIST rarely metastasizes to the lymph nodes.
Treatment for metastatic GIST
If the spread is limited and solitary, surgery is possible.
What if surgery is not possible for metastatic GIST?
If the tumor cannot be removed, GLEEVEC® therapy may be considered.
