Unresectable/Metastatic KIT+ GIST: Options for Treating It
What is metastatic KIT+ GIST?
When KIT+ GIST is metastatic, it means that the tumor has spread to another location. The liver is the most common organ for metastases. KIT+ GISTs may also spread within the abdominal cavity.
In rare cases of advanced disease, it may spread to the lungs or other extra-abdominal organs. GIST rarely metastasizes to the lymph nodes.
Treatment for metastatic KIT+ GIST
If the spread is limited and solitary, surgery is possible.
What if surgery is not possible for metastatic KIT+ GIST?
If the tumor cannot be removed, GLEEVEC therapy may be considered.
